Public works outlines road and sidewalk projects; Simmons Street expected to reopen by late September

Public works staff updated the council on near-term street and sidewalk projects during the city manager’s report.
Mr. Gavin said intermittent resurfacing is scheduled to start later in the week on Locust Street (between Knox and South near Lombard School) with preliminary curb and sidewalk replacement before surfacing; seal-coat work will begin soon in the southeast part of the city and in the Swangataha neighborhood. He said the Safe Routes to School project on Pfeiffer Street near Silas Willard School will begin in about a week and a half and take a couple of months to complete, adding new sidewalk leading to the school. Simmons Street downtown remains under construction but staff said the project is on schedule and they hope to have major work finished and intersections reopened by the end of September.
Council members asked about the condition-assessment tool the city purchased; Mr. Gavin said a consultant collected data citywide, including sidewalks and curb ramps, and staff now maintain five-year maintenance plans in software that centralizes the data to support project prioritization.
