Planning and zoning staff recommended the change and told the council the small strip was recently conveyed from the city to the Galesburg Public Library to prevent encroachment on the library’s parking lot; rezoning the parcel aligns it with the library’s existing zoning designation updated in December 2024. The council voted to suspend rules and proceed to a final reading and adoption the same night; the roll-call vote was 6-0 in favor.
Council members asked no substantive policy changes during the brief presentation; staff said the amendment consolidates the site under a consistent zoning classification and is intended to prevent future encroachment issues. The ordinance was approved for final reading and adoption at the Aug. 4 meeting.
