Trappe to request MDE approval to accept Lakeside treated effluent into town lagoon

Council members voted Aug. 7 to send a letter to the Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE) requesting approval for the Lakeside Wastewater Treatment Plant to send treated effluent to Trappe's lagoon rather than trucking it elsewhere.
Attorney Lyndsey Ryan explained that Lakeside is in start-up and working to meet discharge limits but is unable to spray discharge; Superintendent Steve Callahan and engineering firm GMB advised that the Town could accept the effluent in its lagoon and maintain the flow to avoid issues from an influx of treated effluent. The minutes note the amount of treated effluent is less than the 30,000 gallons-per-day limit Lakeside is permitted to send to Trappe. Commissioner Michael Sullivan moved to send the letter to MDE; Commissioner Walter Chase seconded and the motion was unanimously approved.
The minutes also record that while MDE approval is required for either direct acceptance into the town lagoon or for accepting flow via Lakeside's pumping station, Lakeside is currently trucking its treated effluent to Hurlock for further processing because of cost and permitting constraints.
