Trappe council backs Talbot County plan to raise accommodations tax to 6%

Cassandra Vanhooser presented Talbot County’s accommodations tax code and said the county is considering increasing the tax from 4% to 6%; the county retains a 5% service fee when remitting collections to towns. After discussion, Commissioner Chase moved that the Town of Trappe send a letter of support for the county’s proposed increase. Commissioner Potter seconded; the motion passed with Commissioner Newnam abstaining and Commissioners Sullivan, Schmidt, Potter and Chase voting yes.
The requested letter of support does not change Trappe’s local rate; it expresses support to the Talbot County Council for a county-level increase. Vanhooser provided copies of the county code and materials and told the council how revenue is remitted to towns.
