Dan described how a failing check valve and a cracked pump casing have let water flow backward to the wells and allowed intermittent "slugs" of super‑chlorinated water to pass through the booster pumps, which he said is likely contributing to pump failure. "So we'd replace all 3 of these with new check valves," he said, and outlined replacing two worn gate valves and pulling the damaged pump to weld its casing and replace seals so the unit can return to service. He added that the project team will add a dedicated gate valve between the boosters and the tank to isolate work without draining the full line.
Dan said the plans have been submitted to DDW and that, once review comments and contract specs are complete, the project should go out for bid in roughly two to three weeks. "So, we've submitted this to DDW, and it's been approved by them for a grant for a $158,000," he said. He cautioned that if bids exceed that amount the City would likely need to cover any shortfall; Dan noted the city had about $180,000 left in its budget for the year.
The presenter also described operational changes to reduce chlorine impacts: installing a normally closed solenoid on the chlorine line so dosing shuts when wells are off and tying that valve to the SCADA/PLC system so it opens only when wells run, plus adding a flow meter to verify dosing and help calibrate future chlorine use. Dan said the chlorine system is a gas injection system and that the pipe run to town is roughly a mile, allowing chlorine to dilute before reaching customers.
Next steps: finalize contract documents, advertise for bids in the coming weeks, and evaluate bids against the DDW grant award; if bids exceed the grant, council funding decisions would follow.
