Ward 6 resident says YMCA rules shut her family out, council hears plea

Holly McDermott of Ward 6 told the Galesburg City Council during public comment that her family was turned away when they sought a YMCA membership after losing income. "I had income last year but I don't have income now," McDermott said, describing a staff response that required tax documents or proof of income before offering a reduced rate.

McDermott said the membership requirement also affects other services tied to YMCA enrollment: "My children won't be eligible to get a meal this summer at lunchtime like they have been for the last 3 summers," she told the council, urging members to consider the effect on children who rely on that meal program. The council had already approved funding to the YMCA, and McDermott acknowledged to the panel that "the money's going there," but said many concerns voiced at earlier meetings had not been heard.

The comment drew no formal response during the public-comment period; it was recorded ahead of routine consent and business items. The remark highlights a potential gap between the city's contractual support for the YMCA and how the organization applies eligibility rules on the ground for families with no current income. City staff did not offer an immediate plan for follow-up during the meeting.
