BOCC approves City of Derby island annexation for Pleasantville Baptist Church parcel

The Board voted Nov. 13 to find that a City of Derby island annexation for a roughly 39‑acre parcel owned by Pleasantville Baptist Church will not hinder proper growth and development, and approved a resolution to that effect.
Assistant County Counselor Samantha Siang summarized the statutory requirements for island annexations and said the owner had petitioned and consented; she noted the parcel falls within Derby’s growth area and said county staff had no objections. Siang also corrected a minor arithmetic error in the staff report on tax revenue differences and described that upon annexation the City of Derby would provide police and fire services currently delivered by Sedgwick County entities.
The motion to approve the findings and sign the resolution passed unanimously by roll call. Staff said the property owner intends to construct a church on part of the property and potentially sell remaining acreage for residential or commercial development consistent with comprehensive plan guidance.
