City staff reviewed the annual tax-collection status and described the delinquent-tax process required by state statute.
An interim manager/tax staff member (speaker 10) cited North Carolina statute requirements and said the 2025 property-tax levy for the city totaled $2,547,743, of which $2,201,882 has been collected to date, leaving $345,861 outstanding (roughly 14%). Staff said the law requires a tax-collector report in February and that the government body must order the tax collector to advertise tax liens; notices to property owners will be provided 30 days before publication. The window for advertising tax liens in the newspaper, the presenter said, is March 1 through June 30.
Council members asked clarifying questions about collection goals and staffing; staff said the goal is near 99% collection and that a part-time staff member is working on delinquent accounts and prioritizing current-year collections.
