Fire department highlights FAA remote-pilot certifications, life-saving uses of drones

A presenter (speaker 3) told council that Lieutenant Fairview Hooks and Captain Kyle McDaniel have received FAA remote-pilot certification and that the department's UAVs are used for mapping, charting, inspections and in coordination with the NTSB for crash investigations. The presenter said grants have funded much of the program and described operational benefits, including an inspection of a water tower that avoided paying a contractor about $3,000 to climb the structure.
The presenter said the program has supported life-saving incidents and provides a versatile tool for emergency response, mapping and infrastructure inspection. Council members thanked staff and the presenters for the update.
