CUHS athletics to move leagues as officials’ fees and admission prices rise

District athletic leaders told trustees the Corning Union High School athletic programs will move from the Butte Valley League to the Westside League. Officials’ fees across the section have risen substantially; examples included volleyball officials increasing from $340 to $480 and football official fees from $790 to $1,050 for the cited configurations.
As a result of higher official fees, the meeting noted proposed admission price increases for 2025–26: football adult admission proposed from $7 to $10 and other sports adult admission proposed from $5 to $8. The Board discussed the revenue shortfall these changes create, the potential impact on families and the need for a conversation about athletics fundraising and equitable distribution of donations.
Associate Principal Justine Felton said the district covers coaching stipends, transportation and field maintenance while fundraising typically supports uniforms, tournament fees and equipment. The Board requested a study session on athletics funding and fundraising oversight to evaluate possible responses.
