During a Sept. 16 public hearing, Calumet Village residents pressed officials for details about eligibility and contractor selection for a proposed Community Development Block Grant (MI Neighborhood Funding) application to MSHDA.
Virginia Dwyer asked specifically about income requirements, how the opportunity would be publicized and what would happen if fewer than 16 applicants applied. Sandy Johnson asked whether residents would be able to choose their contractors. Manager Megan Haselden reiterated that the Village and the grant administrator would assist awardees through the application and project-completion process and described how the assessor would prioritize projects with homeowners.
Haselden also summarized the program’s size and timeline: "There will be 16 grants available for $25,000 each," she said, and the Village should hear back by Oct. 15, 2025.
The exchange was procedural and informational; the council did not take a vote to commit local matching funds or accept grant terms during the hearing. Staff said they will follow up with outreach to ensure eligible residents are aware of the application process and will work with the grant administrator on contractor requirements if awards are made.
