County, city and Vera Institute to map justice services and reduce silos

Durham County staff described a collaborative mapping effort with the City of Durham and national partners aimed at reducing silos in justice services and creating a unified point of access for residents.
Assistant County Manager Joanne Pierce introduced Crystal Harris, who said the county team visited the Vera Institute of Justice in New York and will receive technical assistance to inventory programs, map committees and task forces, and develop a comprehensive safety and service plan. “We're actually planning to meet...to look at what are the committees, the task force, what are the groups, what are the nonprofits that are all doing work, but they're doing work in silos so that we can kind of provide, like, a comprehensive safety plan for the county in the city of Durham,” Crystal Harris said.
Staff said the effort will also involve an executive training with the University of Maryland and regular biweekly coordination with local partners, with the goal of creating a single resource where residents can identify services for adults and youth.
