Wichita firefighters describe Kansas Task Force 1 hurricane deployments

Captain Wiebe and a lieutenant described two weeks of work that included swift‑water search and rescue, door‑to‑door damage assessments, and welfare checks. A team member recounted using a satellite phone to reach a family that had not heard from an elderly man for days: "We were able to use our, satellite phone and be able to reach out to her... he's doing okay." Captain Wiebe said the deployments exposed crews to severe infrastructure damage and a diversity of operational challenges.
Commissioners thanked the crew for their service and praised the regional task force model that draws resources from across the state to avoid depleting any single area.
