The Sedgwick County Zoological Society announced a capital campaign on Oct. 23 to raise $10 million for a new "Family Boma" at the Sedgwick County Zoo, aimed at expanding indoor space to accommodate up to five expected elephant calves in 2025.
Scott Nolan, president and CEO of the Zoological Society, told the commission the expansion will double indoor space, add enrichment devices and ‘‘calf creeps’’ and free the original boma for bulls and flexible herd management. "We are very excited to launch our latest capital campaign with a goal of raising $10,000,000 for the Zoo's new Family Boma facility," Nolan said. The society plans to break ground after the calves arrive and expects a grand opening in fall 2026.
Commissioners discussed economic impact and funding sources. Commissioner Dennis, a zoo board member, referenced a prior economic impact study and said the zoo produces significant visitation and local economic activity. Garth Herman, the county's bond counsel, and county CFO Lindsay Perrizzo were not asked to provide county funding at the meeting; the Zoological Society said it is seeking corporate sponsors, private donors and foundation support, and would not request immediate county dollars at this time.
Zoo staff clarified operational details: the indoor barn was originally sized for six elephants but indoor winter housing will be the limiting factor as calves grow. Nolan explained herd management and the plan to partner with AZA and other zoos to transfer animals when appropriate to support broader breeding efforts. The commission voted to receive and file the presentation.
