The board heard from Johanna Novak Palmer, program manager for youth development, about the Solano Youth Leadership Institute, a five-day intensive training in health equity and youth advocacy that brought together students countywide.
"My name is Johanna Novak Palmer. I am the program manager for the youth development department," Novak Palmer said, explaining that 18 students gave up part of their summer to participate. She told the board the students selected project topics including health care access, domestic violence, homelessness, fentanyl prevention and gun violence and that the group visited the State Capitol and met state leaders.
The presentation emphasized partnership with Touro University and other public-health and restorative-justice trainers; staff noted the program’s role in building advocacy skills and connecting youth to ongoing policy and workplace-learning opportunities.
