Colusa County’s IAL literacy grant funds book distributions, staffing and summer pilot

County officials reported progress on the countywide Innovative Approach to Literacy (IAL) grant, including staff hires and distribution of materials to children and families. Superintendent Michael West said the grant supports a Literacy Coach, a Program Director, and a Literacy Liaison role; the IAL team has distributed books during meal pick-ups and is piloting a Lending Learning Device program to place iPads with preloaded literacy content in family homes (SEG 381, SEG 522–526).
Jennifer Jelavich (IAL Digital Literacy Specialist) described plans to run a summer school program using the Footsteps to Brilliance (F2B) curriculum and to offer parent training via Zoom. She reported that the County Library provided 400 books for meal distribution and that a second-grade student using F2B wrote an award-winning book during the program (SEG 705, SEG 706). The Board supported continuing outreach to home schools, private schools, and childcare partners to maximize reach and parent engagement.
