The Chawanakee Unified School District Board approved a new combined Payroll, Accounting and Benefits Manager job description and the creation of the position at its Aug. 12 meeting, with one dissenting vote.
Director of Human Resources Robert French explained responsibilities for the role would include payroll processing, benefits administration, general ledger maintenance, budget oversight and compliance reporting. He said the role requires specialized knowledge of payroll and accounting systems and that combining payroll and accounting duties into a single hire will result in net savings compared with separate positions.
Board Member Jessie Hutchens asked why the title must be "manager," questioned the salary implications and asked who the new hire would manage; French said that person would not manage staff initially and that overtime would be used when required. On both the job description and the position creation, Barbara Bigelow moved to approve and Jack Thornburg seconded. The motions passed with four Ayes (Bigelow, Waltner, Thornburg, Parish) and one No (Hutchens).
The minutes record approval but do not list an enacted salary or start date; trustees asked for clarification during discussion and HR committed to provide additional staffing details as hiring proceeds.
