Board approves Expanded Learning Opportunities plan emphasizing whole-child supports

The Chawanakee Unified School District Board unanimously approved the Expanded Learning Opportunities Program Plan at its Aug. 12 meeting.
Katie Bethune, Coordinator of State and Federal Projects, said the program is a state compliance requirement and focuses on whole-child activities and social-emotional learning. The after-school program will be offered at elementary seat-based sites; students eligible for Free and Reduced-Price Lunch will not be charged, and other families will be assessed a sliding-scale fee with price breaks for families with two or more students.
Barbara Bigelow moved to approve the plan and Elisabeth Parish seconded; the vote was unanimous. Bethune said Teaching Fellows will send invoices and site front offices will collect fees. Trustees asked about collection success in prior years; Bethune responded collection varied by site and the district will continue to monitor fee collection and program participation.
The board did not attach conditions to the approval but asked staff to provide ongoing updates on participation and fee collection to ensure the program meets both compliance and equity goals.
