Board President Seth Waltner told the board that "the District received a letter from the county that they had reviewed the 2024-25 Second Interim report and have changed the district's certification from positive to qualified." Superintendent Jamie Nino said the district is gathering documents and preparing for Financial Crisis and Management Assistance Team (FCMAT) interviews, which are expected to begin at the end of May.
The board voted unanimously to approve the FCMAT Study Agreement. Board member Barbara Bigelow moved to approve and Elisabeth Parish seconded; the motion passed 5-0. The report was described as a technical, independent fiscal review to help the district address the county's concerns under Education Code 42131. Superintendent Nino said the district will request additional time for FCMAT interviews as it compiles the requested financial documentation.
Why it matters: A county classification of "qualified" signals concerns about short-term fiscal stability and may impose additional oversight steps. The FCMAT review will examine accounting, budgeting and fiscal controls and could result in recommendations that affect next year's budget and staffing decisions. The board did not take any immediate personnel or budget-cut motions at the meeting; instead, it authorized the study and information gathering.
What's next: District staff will provide documentation to FCMAT and coordinate interview scheduling. The board will receive the FCMAT findings when the study is complete.
