Durham County Youth Home earns LEED Platinum, seeks counselors as stays lengthen

Director Angela Nunn told the board the Durham County Youth Home has opened two pods totaling 24 beds and recently received LEED Platinum certification: "The new youth home received LEED Platinum Certification this past April." She said the facility moved 14 residents into the new facility in 2024 and gradually increased to 24 as staff were hired.
Nunn requested eight full-time youth counselors and a full-time cook (converting a 50% part-time position) to open two additional pods, and she estimated the facility could generate roughly $1,660,000 in revenue for housing out-of-county juveniles as new pods come online. She also said average length of stay for residents has risen to about 23 days and that the population increasingly includes A through E felonies and older teenagers, which has increased staff stress and retention challenges. Commissioners asked for follow-up data and offered support for partnerships on discharge planning and vocational pathways.
