Durham County Sheriff requests 34 SUVs, five RTP deputies in budget pitch

Sheriff Clarence Birkhead told commissioners during the May 22 budget work session that the Durham County Sheriff—s Office is prioritizing a fleet replacement request and expanded coverage for the Research Triangle Park area. "We are continuously evaluating our fleet according to County policy," he said, and asked for 34 EcoBoost SUVs, upfits and related equipment to keep patrol and investigative units operational.

Preston Edwards, who spoke for the sheriff—s fleet team, said about 24% (79) of the office—s vehicles meet immediate replacement criteria and that the office follows county age-and-mileage rules for replacements. Edwards also outlined vehicle recalls affecting the fleet and said recent industry shifts have reduced availability of Chargers, shifting agencies toward midsize SUVs. Commissioners pressed about cost and timing; Edwards said a base EcoBoost SUV last year cost about $46,000 and tariffs and upfit costs could raise per-vehicle expenses by roughly $3,000—$6,000.

Birkhead also asked for five deputies assigned to RTP as the start of a multiyear plan: "The 5 represents a total ask of 25 over the next 5 years to keep pace" with projected residential growth in RTP, he told the board. Commissioners asked to see job descriptions, anticipated outcomes and how the sheriff will measure success if additional positions are funded. The sheriff said funding for the five positions would come from position realignment and that new deputies would strengthen countywide coverage by freeing current officers to focus on incorporated areas.
