Board approves Teaching Fellows for afterschool program in 3–2 vote amid parent concerns

The Chawanakee Unified School District Board of Trustees approved an Expanded Learning Opportunities Program (ELO-P) contract with Teaching Fellows on a 3–2 vote at its June 17 meeting.
Superintendent Jamie Nino told the board there was a large cost difference between two competitive vendors: "The cost to families using Teaching Fellows will be between $150-200 per month. With My Club the cost would have been $950 per month." The superintendent said the administrative cost differences explained most of the gap and that program offerings were similar except that one vendor offered music.
The motion to approve the Teaching Fellows contract was made by Trustee Elisabeth Parish and seconded by Trustee Jack Thornburg. The vote was recorded as Ayes: S. Waltner; J. Thornburg; E. Parish. Noes: B. Bigelow; J. Hutchens. Those opposing raised concerns about service differences and program continuity for families who had previously used My Club.
Several parents spoke during the public comment period about the afterschool program decision and broader worries that the Minarets agriculture program might be cut; administrators heard these concerns but recorded no immediate change to the award.
