Chawanakee Unified board hears district is in 'qualified' budget status; stabilization plan planned

The Chawanakee Unified School District Board of Trustees learned at its June 17 meeting that the district is currently in a "qualified status," Chief Business Officer Melissa Kielpinski said.
"The District is in a qualified status," Kielpinski told trustees, saying the budget will be reviewed by the County Office of Education and by the Fiscal Crisis and Management Assistance Team (FCMAT). She said the district will be working on a stabilization plan and expects to meet a 3% reserve target where possible.
Trustees asked staff whether the district had analyzed cuts. Trustee Elisabeth Parish asked about potential reductions; Kielpinski replied that while the district was analyzing all expenditures, "no cuts in staffing can be made this time of year." Trustee Jessie Hutchens asked whether the district would be reimbursed if a J-13 adjustment was approved; Kielpinski said the district would be reimbursed if that adjustment occurred.
The budget hearing, held as part of the meeting's public hearings, closed at 7:41 PM after trustees received the CBO's overview. The board approved a slate of related administrative items during the meeting, and Kielpinski said the district will submit revised budget figures to the county as needed while it completes the stabilization work.
