District outlines plan to meet 2025–26 Ethnic Studies requirement

Chawanakee Unified administrators told the board on March 11 that the district will adopt Ethnic Studies by the 2025–26 school year and outlined priorities for the program's design.
Principals and staff — including Rhonda Corippo, Bob Kelly and Lana Jackson — framed the work around three core concepts: Access (a diverse and meaningful curriculum), Relevance (culturally and community-relevant instruction) and Community (bridging schools and local communities so students can apply learning). Staff said initial curricular themes will address identity, history and movement, systems of power, social movements and equity.
Staff described expected benefits that motivated the work: improved attendance, stronger inter-racial relations, higher multicultural awareness, better academic performance and increased likelihood of graduation and postsecondary attendance. Trustees received the report; no formal vote was required at the meeting.
