Kearney Park Board previews capital purchases including $52,000 web climber and skate-park upgrades

Park leadership told the Kearney Park Board that all of its requested capital outlay items were included in the draft budget that city officials will present in depth on Feb. 3.
"That item itself is $52,000," Park board member Lisa Cheesebrow said of a proposed web climber for Jesse James Park. She listed other capital items included in the draft budget: a $10,500 low-profile T-spin merry-go-round, two skate-park corner pieces and ramps with installation estimated at $48,000, a John Deere mower priced at about $25,000 to replace an older unit, $15,000 for new soccer goals and roughly $9,000 for a movies-in-the-park package.
Board members and staff framed the purchases as deferred-replacement and activity-expansion investments: new playground equipment where parts have not been updated since 2007, skate-park enhancements recommended by the vendor, and items to support community events. The parks department said these capital requests are drawn from use-tax and capital outlay lines and will be presented to the Board of Aldermen during the city’s formal budget review.
