Chamblee shelter highlights ‘Mary Jane,’ urges summer fosters and free Tuesday adoptions

The Chamblee City Council heard a short presentation about a dog available for adoption and broader shelter needs at its July 21 meeting. A shelter representative introduced “Mary Jane,” described as “around 3 years old and a big girl at 70 pounds, but she is really gentle,” and said the shelter was operating above its humane capacity goal.
The representative said the shelter counted about 517 dogs when she left earlier that day and reiterated the importance of weekend fosters and free Tuesday adoptions to avoid space-driven euthanasia. “So every dog that we get out by Tuesday nights helps us get as close to that goal as possible,” she said. She promoted upcoming outreach events — a Pup and Pints fundraiser at Scepter Brewing and a DeKalb County pet-food bank — and invited residents to consider short-term fostering or adoption.
Council members thanked the presenters and encouraged community support. The presentation was delivered during the announcements and presentations portion of the agenda and no formal council action was taken on the matter.
