Commissioners weigh naming Admin lobby for William V. 'Bill' Bell; family urges broader recognition
Summary
A naming committee recommended the second‑floor Admin lobby be named for longtime public official William V. 'Bill' Bell; the board debated whether to pursue a lobby naming now or seek coordinated city‑school‑county recognition, and Dr. Christian Belladair (Bell's daughter) addressed the board in favor of a prominent county naming.

The naming committee presented an application—submitted by a family member—to name the second‑floor Admin 1 lobby for William V. 'Bill' Bell in recognition of his decades of public service as mayor and county official.
Shannon, representing the naming committee, outlined the 2016 county naming policy and said the committee received an original application to name the convention center and later a revised application to name the Admin 1 lobby. The committee recommended moving the lobby request to public hearing on May 27, 2025.
Dr. Christian Belladair, who said she submitted the application on behalf of her father, urged the board to approve the naming. “I was hoping that this process would have been easier,” she said, and explained that a visible county building name helps preserve community memory of long‑time public service. Several commissioners voiced support for honoring Bell but asked that any naming not result in multiple duplicate namings across city, county and school properties and suggested coordination among agencies. Commissioner Jacobs and others suggested the lobby is an appropriate, visible place to recognize Bell’s service while some colleagues asked for written assurances that other naming campaigns would not immediately follow before they would support action.
The naming committee will hold the required public hearing and the board will consider the request after the advertised notice period.
