Township unveils draft data-center zoning language, to go before planning commission

Township consultant Robert Barnes told the board the township is preparing a narrowly scoped zoning ordinance to regulate data centers and said the draft will be sent to the planning commission for an informational review.
“We have been...working on an ordinance like every other municipality to regulate and, limit the effects of that... We have a draft going now. It is very limited, areas,” Barnes said, describing the township’s approach as intentionally tight and intended to reduce misinformation by providing clear public outreach. He said the draft will be discussed at the August planning commission meeting and that staff will post information to the township website and social media.
Barnes said municipalities must balance statutory constraints and practical zoning needs; the township’s draft aims to be defensible while limiting areas where data centers could be sited. The planning commission review will be informational initially so residents can learn about the proposal before formal hearings.
