South Whittier honors spelling‑bee winners; Carmela Elementary spotlights CAASPP gains

The board recognized spelling‑bee winners (Leah Guillen will advance to the LACOE competition March 19). Carmela Elementary Principal Dr. Patricia Magaña presented CAASPP results and said writing is a school focus supported by daily writing, collaborative planning and growth tracking.
The South Whittier School District recognized its top three spellers at the Feb. 18 meeting: first place Leah Guillen (5th grade), second place Damian Cordero (4th), and third place Savannah Thompson (4th). Board minutes note Leah Guillen will represent the district at the LACOE Spelling Bee on March 19, 2025.
Carmela Elementary Principal Dr. Patricia Magaña presented the school’s CAASPP data, noting areas of student improvement and identifying writing as a targeted area for growth. Dr. Magaña described plans to strengthen writing instruction through daily writing practice, collaborative planning among teachers and tracking personal growth. Two students read written pieces during the presentation and multiple students who met or exceeded grade‑level standards received certificates.
The meeting also included recognition of Graves Middle custodian Ron Smith with an Above & Beyond award for his work supporting KinderFest and daily facility care.
