Pine County board backs Mediacom BEAD broadband bid, approves $1,000 contribution

The Pine County Board of Commissioners voted to supply a letter of support and a $1,000 financial contribution to Mediacom’s Broadband Equity, Access, and Deployment (BEAD) application after an in-person presentation from company representatives.
Leslie Satter, the county’s economic development coordinator, introduced Jerry from Mediacom, who told commissioners the joint Carlton–Pine project would build 357 miles of fiber overall, including 193 miles in Pine County, and would serve 2,381 unserved or underserved locations across both counties — 1,104 of those in Pine County. “If the funding is approved, the full project build is anticipated to take three years to complete,” Jerry said, and Mediacom committed to phasing service activations to deliver access as soon as sections are completed.
Commissioner [Committee member] (speaker 2) moved to provide a letter of support and a $1,000 contribution; the motion was seconded and carried by voice vote. During follow-up questions, Mediacom’s area director Zachary projected grant-selection timing “by the end of fall 2025” and said construction would likely begin in mid- to late 2026, with phased activations thereafter.
The board’s contribution and letter are intended to improve the county’s competitiveness for BEAD scoring; Mediacom emphasized the contribution was optional and that no minimum amount was required. The board’s action directs staff to draft and send the letter of support and to process the pledged contribution.
