The Hays City Council on Monday voted to appoint Harvey Davis as mayor for the term beginning Aug. 12, 2024, through May 2026.
Council considered the vacancy at the start of its meeting and received a nomination to appoint Davis. A council member moved to nominate Harvey Davis; the motion was seconded and the council voted to appoint him, with three votes in favor and one recusal. After the vote, Davis signed the required oath and was formally welcomed by the council.
“I, Harvey Davis, do solemnly swear or affirm that I have not directly or indirectly paid, offered, promise to pay…for giving or withholding of a vote,” Davis read as he took the oath and signed the document. He told the council he would keep his mayor pro tem closely informed of city business and invited the pro tem to remain involved in meetings in case of any extended absence.
The appointment followed the city's candidate filing deadline (which closed Aug. 8) and was presented to council as an uncontested selection. Council members took photographs and completed the administrative paperwork following the oath. No separate discussion or alternatives to the appointment were recorded in the meeting minutes.
