Golden Hills Community School and JCCS students honored; staff outline supports and programs

Trustees recognized two students of the month during the superintendent's report. Superintendent Lisette Estrella Henderson introduced Xavier, a special-education student, and teacher Amy Samrick described Xavier's transition to the adult program and participation in ESY, community activities and volunteer work.
Dr. Garrett introduced Rayce Creighton as the JCCS October student of the month and said the school’s staff unanimously selected him; she announced Rayce is on track to graduate and noted a graduation scheduled for May 31, 2025. Dr. Garrett and other speakers emphasized the role of Golden Hills staff and programs in supporting students who have faced challenges.
Board and attendees heard program highlights: Golden Hills offers daily morning meetings, a wellness center, laundry and clothing bank, mechatronics and robotics, 3-D printing and construction-trades coursework that includes plumbing, woodworking, drywall and electrical training. Dr. Garrett said the county office has expanded Evergreen Academy from two to three classrooms and detailed enrollment for the adult and independent-study programs.
"Every morning, the Golden Hills staff greets the students on what we call the porch," Dr. Garrett said in describing the school's emphasis on relationships and caring supports. Parents and students described the school as a nurturing environment where students can pursue college classes and vocational certificates.
