At its Aug. 19 meeting the Civil Service Board approved a string of personnel actions extending probationary periods for several city first responders so staff could complete required training or make up time missed for medical leave.
Chiefs and supervisors told the board the extensions were routine steps to ensure employees complete training required under collective bargaining rules. Executive officer Mark Alexander said of firefighter John Ramsey’s requested extension, “Due to his unavailability, we're unable to adequately evaluate his performance across the full scope of the responsibilities required for the position,” and the board approved a six‑month extension beyond Sept. 30, 2025.
Police staff described similar circumstances for other officers. Sergeant Kimberly Pyle said the extension for Officer Eric Zamora Castillo is intended “to ensure he achieves the necessary proficiency in specific areas that impact both his safety and his fellow officers.” Officer Chelsea Levent, who sought a 12‑month extension after medical leave, told the board she had completed six months already and that the requested extension was intended to capture missed training time while on light duty.
The board approved the extensions by voice vote for the items on the personnel agenda (B1–B7 and V8). Board members noted these actions are often tied to FOP collective bargaining time frames and to academy scheduling that can recycle recruits into later classes.
