County approves earlier shift change for EMS crews to address staffing and overtime

The Kendall County Commissioners Court approved a request to move all EMS ambulance units to a uniform 48/96 schedule sooner than originally planned. Staff described that the current mix of 24/72 and 48/96 schedules had forced full‑time employees to cover shifts and generate significant overtime.
County calculations presented to the court showed that staffing a 24/72 truck requires eight employees while a 48/96 truck requires six. ‘‘What Clint did in my office is he calculated what 8 staff members that it takes 8 staff to do the 24 72 truck ... and it takes 6 staff members to do the 48 96. So the difference ... is an additional 31,215,’’ the auditor said when summarizing the staffing math. Staff told the court the net budget change per truck would be on the order of roughly $32,000 but that reduced overtime and insurance savings would partially offset that figure.
Commissioners said the change should help hiring because the 48/96 schedule is more common in the market. The court approved the motion and directed staff to coordinate with HR on an appropriate payroll start date to implement the change, with a likely start in late July or early August to align with pay periods.
