The council authorized the purchase of advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) electric meters on staff recommendation, approving resolution 2026-192 on July 28.
Utility Manager Jeff Shanahan said the AMI backbone depends on the electric meters and reported that 9,430 of roughly 17,000 meters in the system already are installed. He described immediate operational benefits — improved outage detection, remote connect/disconnect, and faster meter reads — and recommended the purchase to fill out the remaining electric meters. Staff presented an estimated purchase amount (stated in the meeting as "$713,000 and 690" in the packet); council approved the purchase 8–0.
Shanahan said AMI has already improved outage management during recent events and should increase efficiency for gas and water meter reads where electric meters serve as data relays. The council approved staff’s recommendation and directed implementation through normal purchasing and installation processes.
