The Alliance City Planning Commission on May 20 conditionally approved a site plan for a two‑story west addition at Alliance Christian Church, 670 W. Main St., subject to engineering corrections and requirements.
John Elsey, an architect with GBC Design in Akron, told the commission the proposed addition would match existing building heights and provide classrooms and a youth center because the congregation is running out of indoor space. "They're looking for a two‑story building that matches the heights of the existing building but they're looking for classrooms and a youth center," Elsey said.
Elsey and staff discussed zoning and technical requirements tied to the project. Because the addition includes a second story, a "relatively new code change" requires sprinkling the addition; the applicant must bring in a fire line and extend service to the existing hydrant on the property. City Assistant Engineer Gavin Kostelic referred the commission to detailed engineering comments (site referencing to the Stark County Mapping System, utility plan requirements, SWP3 and storm calculations, and specific waterline/backflow requirements) that will be conditions of approval. Pete Wearstler, Director of Planning and Development, recommended conditional approval based on those engineering comments.
Commissioner Harry Paidas moved to conditionally approve the site plan, and Elayne Dunlap seconded. The motion passed with all in favor. The commission's approval requires the applicant to address the engineer's checklist (including mapping references, utility and grading plans, stormwater calculations, and waterline/fire service details) before final permits are issued.
