Planning commission approves 47‑space parking expansion for Alliance Friends Church

The Alliance City Planning Commission on May 20 unanimously approved a site plan allowing Alliance Friends Church to expand its front parking lot by about 47 spaces at 1307 W. State St.
Russ Gumm, lead pastor at Alliance Friends Church, told the commission the additional spaces are needed to accommodate growing Sunday attendance and programs. "We are looking to enlarge our front parking lot by about 47 spots," Gumm said during the commission's review.
City Assistant Engineer Gavin Kostelic reported that engineering comments recommend approval, and Pete Wearstler, Director of Planning and Development, said planning recommends approval subject to standard engineering review. Commissioner Harry Paidas asked about the proposed lighting package to avoid illumination affecting nearby properties; Gumm said the only adjacent business likely impacted is a dental office that is closed on Sundays. Safety Service Director Blaine Lewis asked about timing; Gumm estimated construction could begin in August, when a contractor is available, and said the contractor indicated the work could be completed in a matter of days.
Commissioner John Gross moved to approve the site plan; Elayne Dunlap seconded. The motion passed with all in favor. The commission did not record individual roll‑call votes in the minutes.
