Commission tentatively schedules crack sealing for week of Aug. 10; fly‑in may affect timing

The Rangeley Airport Commission heard a staff update that Proseal has a tentative start date the week of Aug. 10 to perform crack sealing and patch repairs across the airfield, though commissioners raised concerns about the Aug. 22 fly‑in and potential closures.

"Right now, we've got a tentative date of the week of August 10 for them to to be out there," staff member Dave told the board. Dave explained the contract allows two weeks for completion and includes liquidated damages if the contractor extends beyond that window, but stressed weather or plant delays could push work later. "There are liquidated damages if they go beyond the 2 weeks," he added.

Staff described two types of work: a quick rubber‑seal application for thin cracks—likely doable on the runway in a day—and a lengthier type‑2 saw‑cut and patch process for larger cracks on aprons and taxiways. Dave said crews will prioritize patching in non‑runway areas first and try to keep the airfield open each night: "Once we get the patching done ... when they leave for the day, we should be able to open up the entire airfield again each night." Commissioners discussed options: move the work earlier to finish before the fly‑in, provide a staging area so crews can work concurrently with the event, or delay until after Aug. 22 to avoid the risk of incomplete work and remobilization costs. No formal vote was taken; staff said they will coordinate with Proseal and report back to the commission once dates are finalized.
