Peninsula Humane Society reports shelter activity, contract timeline and sanctuary plans

Anthony, representing the Peninsula Humane Society, updated the board Aug. 26 on PHS operations and county partnership as the agency marks its 75th anniversary.
Anthony said PHS operates three facilities (Coyote Point intake and field services; the Lantos adoption center in Burlingame; and a new wildlife care center), provided more than 5,500 spay/neuter surgeries last year and responded to nearly 9,700 calls countywide over the prior year. He told supervisors the existing contract to provide animal control and shelter services to the county expires June 30, 2026, and PHS has the option to negotiate a three‑year extension. He also reviewed donor‑funded programs including a pet food bank serving about 500 pets and a planned sanctuary project in La Honda for animals that are unlikely to be adopted; PHS expects permitting in the months ahead and construction in spring 2026.
Supervisors thanked PHS for its volunteer and donor‑supported services and asked staff to coordinate site visits. No formal contract changes were authorized on Aug. 26; PHS said it looks forward to beginning extension negotiations with the county.
