Commissioner Bragg provided an informational update on a donated public sculpture planned for Huron's Roundhouse District, describing the piece as a roughly 10-foot-tall weathered-steel work representing a flaming miscanthus plant.
Bragg said a local donor stepped forward after the commission previously accepted the Klute family donation; the downtown committee worked with the Sioux Falls sculpture-walk organization to select the piece. "It's 10 feet tall. So it'll be a big, large sculpture that represents that, flaming mescanthus plant," Bragg said. The committee recommended siting the piece near the Elks building where space is available. Bragg said the city would review paperwork from the city attorney and would accept liability if the commission supports the donation; the city would also assist with unloading and placement or coordinate artist-provided installation. Because of the sculpture's attachment method, it may be welded onto the existing plate; the specific installation responsibilities remain under discussion.
Commissioners asked questions about size and location, expressed general support and indicated staff should prepare the acceptance paperwork. No action was taken tonight; the item was informational pending attorney-prepared documents and a future agenda item for formal acceptance.
