Police to apply for $15,000 AG Drug Control Fund grant for replacement K-9

The City of Huron will apply for $15,000 from the South Dakota Attorney General's Drug Control Fund to purchase a replacement police K-9, after the commission approved the department's request to seek the seized-asset funding.
Sgt. Derek Leder said the current K-9 has been in service since 2018 and is approaching retirement in 2027. "Our K-9 is 9 years old and, kinda get to the point where, you know, dogs are kinda like used cars at some point," Leder said, explaining the request is a capital purchase contingent on the grant. Leder added the AG fund has supported the department in the past; "I think to this point, I think the AG's office has purchased 2 vehicles for us..." He also warned that turnaround on grant decisions is unpredictable — previous applications have taken many months.
Commissioners approved the request to apply; staff said if the AG fund does not award the grant the department will include the purchase in its 2027 capital asset requests. The application would spend seized-asset dollars for drug-enforcement-related equipment, consistent with the fund's stated purpose. No award decision date was specified.
