Council approves downtown Community Christmas with safety, insurance conditions

Council approved the special-event application for the Community Christmas downtown event scheduled for Nov. 28, with staff recommendations that the fire chief review the safety plan and that the organizers provide event insurance that specifically covers the ice rink and names the city as an additional insured.
"It is November 28. The event will start at 12 and finish up at 06:30," a staff member said, describing planned street closures, vendors, a portable synthetic ice rink and a trackless train. Staff recommended approval with the stipulation that the safety plan be approved by the fire chief and that the event hold additional insurance specific to the ice rink.
A council member moved to accept the application with those stipulations and the motion passed. Staff said they will confirm liability coverage and require the city to be listed as an additional insured rather than merely a certificate holder.
