Committee approves $10 million bonding authorization for Shaker Place rehabilitation

The Albany County Guardian Finance Committee on July 30 authorized a bond resolution allowing up to $10,000,000 in bonds to fund high‑rise infrastructure and floor remodeling at Shaker Place Rehabilitation and Nursing Center.
Sean Thellum (speaker 3), introduced by the clerk earlier in the agenda, described the project scope: approximately 44,000 square feet across the high‑rise floors will be rehabilitated to provide a dedicated nurse‑aide training suite, office space and a floor for information services. The presenter said much of the existing mechanical and electrical infrastructure is about 50 years old and will require replacement. "All the infrastructure was 50 years old, the pipes to everything," Thellum said when summarizing the need for the capital work.
Committee members asked whether the floors would add resident beds (the presenter said they would not), which areas might be reimbursable through capital reimbursement, and confirmed architects and engineers are being onboarded and that an RFP is currently out. The committee approved the bonding authorization by voice vote.
