Director Barrias explained the committee will have equal numbers of teachers (selected by the teachers’ association) and administrators; teachers must sign consent forms and submit evidence such as intensive training hours, college coursework or relevant degrees. “So that would not be an English, social science, science, or math course. It’s specifically an elective course,” the director said while explaining the code’s scope.
Trustees asked whether current elective assignments are grandfathered. Staff said the local assignment option is designed to correct misassignments going forward and that teachers currently teaching electives would submit applications and evidence to the committee for review. Trustees also discussed the program’s intent to avoid state sanctions that can arise from misassignment thresholds and whether the new process adds administrative steps.
The board approved the plan by motion. Staff said recommendations from the committee will return to the board for approval and that the committee will meet annually to review applications for the coming year.
