Selectmen award contract for copper water-service replacements in District 2

The Board of Selectmen on June 2 voted to award a contract to B and W Caving and Landscaping LLC to replace existing plastic water services with new copper services in District 2 roads.
Jill Stevens, Director of Utilities, told the board the crew pre-inspected curb stops and identified “21 houses that need services replaced. We estimate about 660 linear feet of copper tubing that needs to be replaced,” and said crews estimated a not-to-exceed contract amount of about $110,000. Stevens added that curb-stop replacement needs could change once crews excavate in the field.
Board members asked how the program will be phased townwide; Stevens said the town has roughly 7,900 services and crews have investigated “a couple thousand” so far and are coordinating replacements with the Department of Public Works paving schedule to avoid leaving trenches prior to repaving. The Chair emphasized completing replacements before paving to avoid repeated digs after road work.
The motion to approve the award carried on a voice vote. The town will proceed with the scheduled work in District 2 and coordinate with DPW on paving timing to minimize disruption.
