Sandpoint hires Planet Geo for new tree inventory; fieldwork to map roughly 5,000 trees

City staff announced that Planet Geo will begin a new citywide tree inventory the week after the July 30 meeting and is expected to complete fieldwork in approximately six to eight weeks.
Eric Bush told commissioners that Planet Geo, contracted through Idaho Department of Lands, will undertake field surveys to measure species, health characteristics and planting sites; he said the vendor expects to survey about 5,000 trees and then perform backend data compilation. “They’ll be picking up about 5,000 trees, estimated, in our current inventory,” Bush said. The new inventory will create a fresh dataset and allow comparison with archived inventory data to identify canopy gaps and planting priorities.
Staff also reported that spongy-moth traps have been posted around town through late September/early October for monitoring by Idaho Department of Lands, and that remote-sensing/LiDAR datasets may be available to supplement field work.
