Parks staff presented two grant-funded purchases and council approved both.
For Wapsiena Park the staff request was a $2,654 purchase for two concrete bag-board (bags game) setups funded through the Iowa Health and Human Services 5-2-1-0 project. Parks staff said, "Our plan is to remove 0.5 of the current horseshoe pits that are down there and then replace those 2 that we take away with these 2 sets of bag boards, try to get some more choices into our parks and hopefully more of the public in our parks as well." The grant is reimbursement-based; staff will submit receipts for refund after purchase.
The council also approved a $7,375 purchase for a weight rack, the final piece in a racquetball-room conversion to a multi-use fitness area. Parks staff said the weight-rack purchase is dually funded through the 5-2-1-0 grant and the Jones County Community Foundation; total project funding was stated as $13,690 with the project roughly $300 over budget. Both purchases were moved and approved during the council meeting.
