Sheriff's office reports quarterly crime, citation totals; council asks for resident breakdown

The Davis County Sheriff’s Office presented the city with its quarterly report for Oct. 1–Dec. 31, 2024, reporting citation and incident totals and category-by-category trends. The presenter said the quarter included a rise above the three‑year average in citations and itemized enforcement: "So we have 310 total citations," the presenter said, and later provided counts for moving and nonmoving violations, written warnings and parking citations.

Council members pressed for additional detail and context. One asked whether the city’s 43 parking violations were snow-related; another requested a breakdown of incidents by resident versus nonresident to assess whether enforcement is driven by through traffic or by local residents. The sheriff’s office representative said the data exist and agreed to include a resident/nonresident snapshot in the next quarterly report but cautioned about accuracy and about presenting residency breakdowns in public meetings, saying the numbers are only as accurate as the information reported to dispatch.

The presenter also summarized investigative workload and victim services: detectives logged hundreds of hours on 37 new cases in the quarter, and victim-services teams served 17 new victims in the period. Council members requested follow-up clarity on how hours were tallied and how ongoing service counts are tracked.

The council used the presentation to identify follow-up items rather than to take formal action. The sheriff’s office agreed to provide the resident/nonresident snapshot in the next quarterly packet and to clarify reporting conventions for hours and case tallies.
