The Salary Review Commission on July 31 voted to keep the mayor's salary unchanged for the 2027 year and to apply a 3.5% increase beginning Jan. 1, 2028. The motion, which the commission moved, seconded and approved by a 4–1 margin, sets the change as a two-step adjustment rather than a single-year increase.
Commissioners framed the decision as cautious and procedural. One commissioner summarized the plan in session: "the 1st year would say flat and then the 2nd year would increase by 3.5%, which is the unadjusted percent change from June 2025 to June 2026," reflecting staff-cited Bureau of Labor Statistics CPI data. The Chair moved the motion and the commission carried it 4–1; one commissioner recorded a dissent. Staff said the effective date for the increase would be Jan. 1, 2028, and that implementation details and finalized language will appear in the commission's report and the public hearing packet.
Why it matters: commissioners said the phased approach recognizes current budget constraints while ensuring the mayor's pay keeps pace with recent inflation indicators. The commission instructed staff to include the decision and supporting justification in the public materials published ahead of the August hearing. The final administrative salary schedule will be published with the commission's report and is subject to normal administrative formatting and correction.
