Marysville resident asks whether state law requires officers to live in-state after weekend unrest

During the public comment period, resident Jeff Push described a recent incident that frightened his daughter and said his research suggested there is no state law requiring police officers to reside in the same state where they work.
"As far as I could tell, there is no overarching law that says they have to reside in the same state that they work in," Jeff Push said, and asked the mayor, council and police department why that is and whether additional security would be provided for upcoming events. Mayor Nehring urged Mr. Push to speak briefly with Assistant Chief Lawless after the meeting for follow‑up and said staff would try to direct him to the appropriate source of legal information.
The council did not debate the policy at the meeting; staff offered to follow up with Mr. Push and the police department.
